Kate Somerville: The Journey into Clean Skincare Beauty
This post was supposed to be a review of Cohorted Beauty Box for March 2023. However, I received the box one month later again. I unsubscribed from their monthly beauty box, but I still love their product curation. This box was one I was so eagerly waiting, because it is from a female founder beauty company. Kate Somerville beauty products are amazing, and I will tell to you about some of them.
Kate Somerville brand story
All amazing things have a very good story behind them, so I will start with that. The journey of Kate Somerville was one of defying all expectations and never giving up. Facing parent’s dependence on alcohol, fighting painful eczema and acne outbursts as a teenager, leaving home in high school, working three jobs in college. All were just some of the life obstacles Kate had to face.
“People told me my dreams were impossible. I didn’t take it personally. I found a way to defy impossible.”
Kate Somerville
However, she managed to overcome them all. She enrolled in an esthetician school and soon opened her own esthetics clinic. Her post-procedure care made her celebrity clients quickly fall in love with her.
Her first product, Exfolicate, was born in 2005. It was sold out in 1 hour. And today her clinically perfected luxurious formular are sold all over the world. Everything created by her is independently tested and perfected in the clinic, as well as adapted for every age, ethnicity, and skin type.
At the same time, Kate is also giving back to things dear to her hear. She works closely with Living Free Animal Society and Plastic Oceans. She made a pledge that by 2025 all her products’ packaging will be 100% recyclable.
Kate Somerville Products
I will not talk about all products she created. You can check them out on her website.
However, I will talk about the four products I did try over the years and that I also received in my Cohorted March 2023 Beauty Box.
Exfolicate Intensive Exfoliation Treatment
This exfoliating scrub is simply amazing. It was Kate’s first product, and it did miracles. The pores are unclogged, and the skin texture is smoother in just a few minutes. And the skin is immediately ready to absorb the next skincare products (serums, moisturizers, face oil, etc.) in just a few minutes.
I followed the advice on the website and used this twice a week, at night. Also, I noticed that using it in the shower enhances indeed the strength of the product. The reason is the steam, that helps activate the enzymes.
I have a sensitive skin right now because of a really acid Vitamin C serum I tried last week. So I leave this product I found in the Cohorted box on my face for only 1 minute. Otherwise, 2 minutes are recommended. The ingredients (honey, aloe vera, vitamin E, papaya, pineapple and pumpkin enzymes, AHA and BHA acids) are soothing and calming, while also hydrating and exfoliating. Which makes this product perfect for every skin type.
Exfolicate Resurfacing Body Scrub
I will remain in the same category of products, moving from the face exfoliator to the body scrub. This product has triple effect: exfoliates, restores, and reveals smooth and radiant skin. It is perfect for dry and rough skin, without making the skin feel sensitive afterwards.
I used it before for my elbows. They were really dry and rough, and this body scrub helped rejuvenating their skin.
The formula has pumice, honey, aloe, and soybean oil, caffeine, and papaya, pineapple and pumpkin enzymes as key ingredients. On the website it is suggested to use it 2-3 times per week, massage for 30 seconds, allow the products to sit for 3 minutes, and then thoroughly rinse. I did not follow the advice of using it while in the shower. Instead, I was using it immediately after getting out of the shower, while my skin was still wet. I don’t think the results would have been dramatically different. The scrub still did its job perfectly the way I used it.
Goat Milk Cleanser
I am a huge fan of CeraVe cleansers, and it is very hard for me to find a product that is so hydrating and nourishing to the skin, while also deep cleansing. This product from Kate Somerville is one that checks all boxes for what I look for in a cleanser.
I like to use it in the evening, when I double cleanse with the CeraVe product to melt away all makeup and dirt from the day. I love the fact that it is a non-foaming, creamy formula, as well as the fact that it is sulfate-free. Clean beauty is an important aspect for me not only for my skincare, but also for my haircare, and sulfates are an ingredient I always try to avoid in my products. I am also a fan of this product because it is perfect for sensitive skin, and the goat milk, as well as the jojoba and avocado oils not only rinse away the dirt, but also leave the skin feeling nourished and hydrated.
I had issues with other cleansers that left my skin dry and not properly cleaned, but this is definitely not the case with this product that soothes, nourishes, moisturizes and conditions at the same time.
Goat Milk Cream
I left this product for last, because it is the one about which I will have most to say about. I just looove this moisturizer and it is probably the third time I purchase it in the last two years. To insert it in my skincare routine, I use it as my day light hydrating cream, as during the night I have a heavier formula.
I don’t know how the goat milk property are clinically enhanced, but this is the only product that helps me keep redness patches under control. I did some time ago a skin diagnosis at a clinic that told me I lack lipids in my face skin, which is causing the sensitivities and redness, and goat milk is known to be quite fat in general, so maybe this is the secret.
However, I recommend this for everyone, regardless of skin type. On the website it says that it is perfect for dry skin, but my skin type is combination to oily and it still works perfectly. The formula is mildly exfoliating, hydrating, and protecting, which is something all of us need in our day-to-day skincare routine.
Lastly (I did say it is the product I have most to say about, right?), I love the packaging. With a center dispensing jar, all I have to do is press with both thumbs the dispenser, and the pump will release just the right amount for one application. I usually keep my nails quite long at it is a nightmare to try to get cream products out of jars without it going behind my nails. This dispenser solves this problem for me, and it is something quite easy to get addicted to using.
Kate Somerville Beauty Box from Cohorted in a Nutshell
About the Cohorted Box, the disadvantages from last month are still here (mainly the delivery time and the extra tax duty not advertised on the website), so I permanently canceled my subscription. If you want to read my opinion about their box, you can to so here.
However, this post was about Kate Somerville brand and products. I am always looking for beauty products that are not only effective, but also environmentally sustainable. The attention given to each product in order to insert only the most effective and natural ingredients is a most for me, as well as the cruelty-free and clean beauty part. The story behind the brand only makes me fall in love even more with the products.
I rarely talk so much and with so many appreciative words about a brand, but this is one that truly deserves them. In the meantime, I ordered another beauty box with the goat milk cream from Kate Somerville inside that I hope will arrive soon after Easter.
I believe our skin deserves only the best, and those products I talked about in this post are some that I wholeheartedly recommend. Have you ever tried those products before?
